L3A of French stops, fricatives, and stop-liquid clusters (Steele 2004-09)

Description: This study investigated the acquisition of French stops, fricative and stop-liquid clusters by Mandarin speaking-learners who had previously acquired English. Learners had acquired their French in Quebec and/or France, and ranged in proficiency from beginner to advanced. Native Quebec French speakers served as controls.

Data elicitation: The data are nonce words. Participants were first trained on the nonce words. This involved presenting them with the written form of the word and having them listen to a recording of a female Quebec French speaker. They then read the words in a carrier sentence in a randomized order twice. They also read the French version of the 'Northwind and the Sun' passage.
